My experience at the 2006 ADHA Annual Session in Orlando Florida was nothing but exhilarating. I was given this great opportunity to attend through the SADHA organization at Phoenix Community College at which I am currently an attending senior and SADHA treasurer. During my week stay in Orlando, I was able to network with many other students throughout the United States. It was very interesting to compare how each state varies and how the ADHA is trying to unify all the states. I learned how important it is for students to get involved in the ADHA because they are forming our future. We as students have a lot of input during this session and the ADHA wanted to hear from us. Some very important items in question were discussed with this one example: Should human test subjects be used for the board exam? This question was not resolved at this time and further study is going to be completed. I am sure this will be discussed again and voted on in future sessions.
Students also have a great opportunity to raise awareness during this time at the student table clinics and poster sessions. Table clinics presented theory, service, trend, or expanded opportunity in the field of dental hygiene and oral health. The poster sessions were research based presentations, which provided a hypothesis, statement, statistical tests, and final results including data analysis. All students that were presenting at the tables stood by and were able to discuss their findings and shared the information gathered with all of us. Awards were given to these students during a special luncheon in their honor.
I am very grateful to have had this opportunity to open my eyes and get more excited in the profession that I have chosen. Thank you Phoenix College for allowing me this opportunity to attend. I want to encourage students and school advisors to find ways to inspire more students to attend these annual sessions. If more students get involved, the association will grow and boost the hygiene association into “our” future. The future is for all of us. We have a say “now” as to how we would like it to be.
