The 3rd Annual Student House of Representatives (SHOR) will be held on Friday, October 10, 2008.
What is the HOD?
The House of Delegates (HOD) is the governing body for the ASDHA. It is the forum at which the professional
direction of ASDHA is decided.
Delegates from the Northern Arizona Dental Hygienists’ Society (NADHS), Southern Arizona Dental Hygienists' Society (SADHS), East Valley Dental Hygienists’ Society (EVDHS), and Central Arizona Dental Hygienists’ Society (CADHS) convene one time each year to conduct the business of the ASDHA. The HOD is also where new ideas for the organization are introduced, voted upon, and placed into action by the Board of Trustees of ASDHA. Delegates are members who have volunteered their time to represent their component. Each delegate represents ten other component members - they represent you.
If you have professional concerns or ideas for your profession, this is the place to have them addressed. The HOD is where it all happens. You can help guide your association in the professional direction of your choice. It has been said that if you do not vote in your national and local elections than you have no right to complain about the way things are done. The same holds true for your state and local dental hygiene associations. If you want things to change or improve or you see a need that has not been fulfilled, become a delegate or at least contact a delegate or a state officer and have your ideas heard. If you wish to get involved by becoming a delegate to the House of Delegates, please contact your Component Trustee.
Student House of Representatives
The ASDHA's third Student House of Representatives will be held Friday, October 10, 2008.
The Student House of Representatives
(SHOR) allows students the opportunity to discuss and vote on selected issues that are under consideration by the ADHA House of Delegates (HOD).
SHOR, which meets during ADHA’s annual session, is composed of 12 district student delegates, 12 district student alternates, and student representatives from each dental hygiene program.
During SHOR the 12 district student delegates elect one representative to serve as voting student delegate. This individual represents and votes for all the students at the ADHA HOD.
Student representatives select a student speaker of the house to preside over SHOR, with the assistance of ADHA’s speaker of the house. Any student representative, with the exception of any district student delegate who elects to run for the ADHA voting student delegate position, is eligible for this position. Knowledge of parliamentary procedure is recommended.
All student members can elect to volunteer for three positions within SHOR: teller, page, and time keeper.
Tellers distribute, collect, count, and report the results for the elections of the student speaker of the house and the ADHA voting student delegate. Five volunteers normally are needed during the session. One person serves as head teller and represents the reports of the tellers.
Pages deliver written motions to the student speaker of the house and relay messages from one part of the house to the other. Six volunteers are needed for this position; three serve during the morning session and three during the afternoon session.
Time keepers let the student speaker of the house know when an individual’s designated speaking time is up. Two volunteers serve in this position—one for each session of SHOR.
